The temple is one of the few multi-religious temples in Sri Lanka, revered by Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus and the indigenous Vedda community. This makes it a symbol of religious harmony.
Try to time your visit during one of the daily pujas. The temple is also at its brightest during the Kataragama Esala Festival in July/August.
It is customary to buy offerings (puja vattis), which consist of fruits and flowers, for a more profound experience. You can purchase these from vendors near the temple entrance.
Photography is permitted in the outer areas of the temples. However, it is prohibited inside the shrines and taking photos of pilgrims without their permission is often discouraged.
Wear respectful clothing and remove your shoes when entering the shrines. Avoid pointing at statues, and maintain a calm and respectful demeanour so as not to disturb the pilgrims.
